It is my intention to discuss the virtues of hand held vacuum cleaners and not my intention to discuss the virtues of having a wedding list; although I personally do consider a list to be a good thing; benefiting the bridal couple (who are less likely to receive unwanted or duplicate presents) and the guests (who have the convenience of knowing what the couple want or need.)

So, assuming you are producing a list why should you include a hand held vacuum cleaner on it?

·  A hand held vacuum cleaner should be on your list because it is a household essential. A few years ago it was considered a luxury to have a dishwasher or a tumble drier, and a generation prior to that could only have dreamt of a washing machine. Now all these appliances are counted household essentials. It would almost be inconceivable to build a new home without them.

The same could now be said for the hand held vacuum cleaner. Although you probably don’t appreciate it’s “essential,” “necessity” status if you haven’t had one previously or don’t own one presently. Once you become accustomed to the convenience and utility of a hand held vacuum you will not easily do without that convenience again.

·  Your guests will appreciate the option of a product with such a wide range of price points. Meaning the quests can match a cleaner to their budget. [Of course, this is not the case if you specify a particular model.] With cleaners ranging from a few tens to a few hundred pounds (dollars) it becomes a viable option for all your guests.

When you sit down to draw up your weekly shopping list or perhaps your heading out for a day’s shopping, I understand that a hand held vacuum cleaner is probably not in your thinking. One reason why it doesn’t figure larger in people’s thoughts is that it is not an essential – a household can survive without one. A “normal” vacuum cleaner is considered essential but the hand held, not. I readily admit this much but ask you to consider the following two points:

1.      The convenience of a hand held vacuum cleaner over the standard size cleaner. Easily the main selling point of the hand helds is their convenience. No one I think would suggest for a moment that they take the place of their larger relatives or that any home could do without the bigger cleaner, but it is simply so much easier and quicker to deal with small situations that occasionally arise with a much smaller hand held than start to get out the big machine in order to clean the small pile of pencil sharpenings left behind on the floor by the child after doing their homework. The hand held vacuum cleaner would have the job finished and you could have it stowed away where ever you normally keep it stored in the time you would require just to put together the other machine, with it’s base and hose and tube and cleaning attachment.

The convenience or utility of the machine can be enhanced depending on what variety of hand held you purchase. For example, if you own a cordless cleaner you can have it wall mounted and plugged into a socket meaning its batteries are constantly charged and it’s ready for action 24/7. You just lift, use and immediately set it back in its wall mount, where it remains ready for the next use.

2.      The relative inexpensiveness of hand held vacuum cleaners. Yes, you can opt for a top of the range, all singing, all dancing hand held, and fork out £200/$300 for the privilege, but you don’t have to spend anything like that in order to own a perfectly useable, effective, robust cleaner. There is such a range of options with varying prices that it is true to say there is a price tag to suit every budget. Of course, as with every other product range a budget price may only purchase a budget machine and the more features you require will almost certainly dictate a higher price, but, in general, hand held vacuum cleaners are not expensive, and not when you consider the convenience that they deliver to you.
